I was sent out for various clients including South West Highways, South West Water and The Met Office to photograph the recent floods around Devon, particularly the Grand Western Canal’s burst banks at Halberton. You may have already seen the shot’s on TV and press from differing sources, but here’s my take on it.
South West Highways were quick off the mark, putting a barrier in place to secure the water and prevent further water from reaching the flooded area. There has been much speculation about the cause of the freak embankment collapse, one theory was that a combination of run off water from the heavy rainfall combined with illegal pumping of water into the canal caused it to rise 23mm in one night and subsequently burst it’s banks. If you look closely in the pictures you’ll see long cracks on the pathway I was standing on. Ulp.
